Prepare yourself for the most intense shopping experience of your life. This best-known of Istanbul's markets began after the 1493 conquest, contained the slave trade and was full of Silk Road traders. The vast, labyrinthine market is easy to get lost in. There are more than 4000 stalls in almost seventy streets, and far from the camels and slaves of 500 years ago, you can buy plasma televisions and souvenirs. Haggling is absolutely essential, and you'll need to work hard for your bargains.
Just outside the bazaar's western gate you'll find the Sahaflar ?arsisi, the Old Book Bazaar. Here you can peruse antique Turkish volumes, as well as books from all over the world.
