The Bosphorus Strait is one of the world's busiest waterways, and it's fascinating to watch the many boats navigating their way through the waters. Take the half-hourly commuter ferry up the strait from Eminonu.
The ferry stops at Besiktas, Ortakoy and Bebek, and each of these places has enough to keep you occupied for a few hours. Or you can just sit and watch Istanbul's parks, mansions and palaces slide by. It's a relaxing way to spend a couple of hours.
The best place to catch the ferry is from Karakoy (over the Galata Bridge from Eminonu) to Kadikoy.
When the sun goes down, why not enjoy a night cruise on the Bosphorus. You don't know what romantic is until you've surveyed this intriguing city's cityscape by night. The twinkling lights, the fishing boats bobbing silently on the waves and the searchlights from the ferries add up to a delightful sight.
Head to Kadikoy for a meal or just take in the sights, or if you'd like a shorter ride, go from Eminonu to Uskudar. At Uskudar you can also have a meal or you can turn right and stroll around the coast to the tea gardens near the Semsi Pasa Mosque. Follow this up with a walk along the waterside promenade past the Maiden's Tower.
