This incredible structure is the best-preserved Greco-Roman theatre in the world. Once part of the ancient city of Aspendos, the theatre could hold around 7,000 people.
Aspendos Theatre was built around 155 AD and was designed by the Greek architect Zenon under the rule of Marcus Aurelius.
Built into the hillside, it is designed so that the audience feels cut off from the rest of the world; their reality suspended for the duration of the performance.
The Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival holds performances in the theatre each year in June and July. To catch an opera or ballet here would surely be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
