Byzantine hippodrome Information
Byzantine hippodrome Summary
Istanbul's most incredible historical remains can be found in Sultanahmet Square, in the heart of Istanbul's Old Town. This was once Istanbul's hippodrome, built in 203 AD just after the Roman conquest of the city. It was completed a century later for the ceremonies of Byzantine Emperor Constantine the Great, whose enduring wish was to make Constantinople a powerful second capital of the Roman Empire.
Today, the ancient works line the square, and also grace its centre. Features
