KAS Please also see Kas Marina Project
If
you did a Google image search on 'Kas, Antalya', you would find many
beautiful pictures of the town, the Mediterranean and the surrounding
area. This is one of the few places in the world (that I have been)
where the reality is so much more wonderful than a picture can
capture. Kas is a calm and
picturesque town nestling between the Mediterranean and the Taurus
Mountains, whose steep slopes rising to 500 meters protect it from the
northerly winter winds. This is the most southerly of Turkish resorts
and it enjoys long hot summer days and mild winters.

It
is located in the region known as Lycia, the homeland of the once
renowned people of the Lycian civilisation, who predated the Greeks and
Romans. Kas was built on the site of the ancient Greek town of
Antiphellos but remains of the earlier Lycian civilisation are to be
seen all around.
This
is an area of wonderful scenery, fascinating history, abundant and
varied wildlife and a gorgeous climate. The thriving town of about 8000
local inhabitants is large enough to be able to offer the visitor a
copious range of tourist facilities but not so large as to
lose its sense of intimacy and integrity.
The reputation
of Kas has been such that in recent years many Turks have made it their
choice of holiday destination. Now it is favoured by visitors from many
nations who enjoy the fact that everything is here but on a human
scale. It is just a little too distant from airports to attract the
interest of package holiday companies!
Excellent restaurants
and shops are to be found in the older part of the town - a hillside
cluster of buildings with traditional Ottoman balconies and stone-paved
streets. To the west of the town the ancient Greek amphitheatre is
still used for concerts and other cultural events.
When
the sun goes down, the town square adjacent to the harbour throngs with
people relaxing and enjoying the many street cafes and bars or simply
taking in the Jasmine scented evening air. The ancient rock tombs on
the hillsides above Kas are lit up and the ambiance is fabulous. Many
people who visit Kas (me and my family included) fall in love with the
place and make it their home. It is difficult to explain, but there is
a spirit to the place that is unique and deeply satisfying.
Until
fairly recently when the coastal roads were built, access to the town
was only possible by boat; today boating still plays a large role in
the life of the town. The harbour offers mooring for a range of vessels
including gulet cruise boats which can be chartered to tour the
beautiful coastline and myriad of off shore islands. A new marina is
being built which will offer mooring for a 470 yachts. The impact on
property prices in the area will be significant. Completion of this
project is expected to be October 2008.
Kas is renowned as the
best centre in Turkey for scuba diving with its crystal clear waters
and abundant variety of sea life. Other activities include paragliding,
sea-kayaking, trekking, mountain biking, canyoning and jeep safaris.
For
serious walking or for a gentle stroll there is the 509 kilometer
Lycian way which passes by Kas and is considered by the Sunday Times to
be one of the ten most beautiful walks in the world.
From
a practical perspective, Kas has 3 supermarkets (you can buy
frozen food,Cameron!) that offer pretty much everything you would
expect. There is also a good variety of butchers, green grocers, fish
mongers, wine merchants, spice shops, hardware shops, barbers,
beauty parlours, boutiques, shoe shops etc. Friday is market day.. and
there you will find local produce including all manner of vegetables,
cheese and fruit - as well as clothes, shoes, fancy goods and
hardware stalls.
Within
striking distance there are many beaches and coves to explore. Patara
has the longest beach in Europe - it stretches 18 kilometres of
tree fringed white sand - it is forbidden to build there. The entire
beach is a protected as a wild life conservation area as it is where
the Caretta Caretta turtles lay their eggs. Patara is also famous as
the birth place of St.Nicholas (Santa!).
There
is loads more to tell, I could go on and on! hopefully the above has
given you at least a taste of the place. Please let me know if you
would like further information. I look forward to showing off Kas to you when you come!
Kemer
Kemer
is an important tourism center with green and blue met qualified,
resort, restaurant and beach facilities, yacht ports and historical
cities. Kemer is a well known resort on Turkey's pristine
pine-shaded Mediterranean coast 35km (22 miles) southwest of Antalya. Though
not as large or elaborate as Mexico's Cancún, the principle at Kemer
(keh-MEHR, pop. 25,000) is the same: pick a favorable seaside location
with little habitation and build a modern resort town of
pretty villas, apartments and hotels in it. Having said
that the old Kemer with its old houses and proud locals form an
essential part of Kemer's attraction. The beaches are mostly
of pebbles and stones, although the ones near the yacht marina and
Yörük Parki (an anthropological park with a Turkish nomad theme) are of
pure sand. Kemer can be a base for exploring nearby sites like
Olimpos, Phaselis, Termessos, Perge and Aspendos. Turkey
Property in Kemer is certainly ideal for those looking for long hot
summers and warm winters, sea lovers and those in search of
history. In addition, Antalya city is only 20 minutes away with
its international airport and large city amenities. ClimateSummers are hot and dry, and winters are warm and precipitating. Places to visit in Kemer
One
of the leading attractions of Kemer is its natural beauty.
Crystal clear sea, deep forests and mighty mountains join at one
point. The views are breathtaking indeed.
Ancient
cities near Kemer, such as Faselis and Olympos are certainly not
to be missed. You can reach Faselis and Olympos from Kemer
by maritime lines and by land. Recently organized safari tours to Sögüt
Cumasi, Altinyaka Dere Village and similar mountain routes are
also among regional attractions.
 No
talk of Kemer is complete without the caverns surrounding the
area. Cavern Beldibi is 27 km south west of Antalya by
the seaside. The cavern is home to ruins of prehistoric
civilizations. Another interesting cavern is Molla Deligi
cavern, on eastern slope of Mount Tahtali, which rises at west of
Kemer. Molla Deligi can only be reached by foot from
Asagi Kuzeydere or Tekirova villages on Kemer - Kumluca
highway.
ANCIENT CITIES :
PHASELIS at 58th km of Antalya - Finike road or by maritime lines 15 km from Kemer.
It
is thought that one of the eastern coastal cities of Lycia, Phaselis is
one of the commercial cities of Hellenistic Age of VIth century B. C.
It becomes a bishop center during Romans. Thick walls of eastern port
of Phasellis, composed of three ports, are still in good condition.
Western port, whose front and western parts remain
submerged in sand is perfect for a swim along the
history lane so to speak.
Most parts of the ruins
of Phaselis are from the Roman period. These ruins are; port,
castle walls, Zeus Temple, King Antonius Caravella road, also twenty
lined theater ruins. Peninsula's entry part, composing of old streets,
is marvelous to have a stroll through. It begins from south port
and reaches to city gates. It is thought that this area was
used as a stadium from time to time due to width and shortness of this
street. History writes that two very important athletism
competitions were performed within Phaselis.
There are
two temples near the Agora. One of them is constructed for the sake of
"Athena Polias", which is a highly important goddess for Phaselis.
Other one is for the sake of "Heista" and "Hermes". Building
ruins, a church as well as houses of bishops among these ruins can be
seen along sides of the street. Aquaducts,
which covered the water needs of the city, were constructed in
Roman style and still in very good condition.
There is also a museum, in which some ancient pieces of art excavated in Phaselis can be seen.
OLYMPOS is
between Kemer and Adrasan. After passing Phaselis on the
Antalya - Kumluca road, Olympos road is signposted. Çirali
is an ancient coastal village beside Olympos. The city, which was
founded in 2nd century B. C. has been deserted since 6th
century. Famous Bellerophontres - Chimera war was fought in
this very area. An hour's walk on a tight and uneven slope
descending from a river bed after Çirali will bring you to
Chimera's unique natural ambient. Chimera is known by the natives
as "Yanardag" due to a continuously burning natural gas,
elevating from mount Olympos.
SPORTS ACTIVITIES :
Jeep Safari Daily jeep safaris from Kemer to Toros Mountains, are organized by expert agents.
Bicycle Tours There
are many biking routes in and around Kemer for those
adventerous bikers, who wish to explore the ancient ruins and the
scenic countryside.
Horse Riding Horse
riding is rather advanced in this area with horse riding teachers
and numerous stables within resort facilities in Kemer and
neighbouring villages.
Yachting Port
Kemer services the needs of even the most discerning Yachtsmen with
its qualified staff and excellent facilities. Blue tours,
first founded in Kemer, provides the possibility to see bays and
ports between Kemer and Kas, ancient settlements and natural
beauties.

Antalya City The
city of Antalya, home to nearly 1 million
inhabitants, stretches along Antalya bay, and is located at
39 metres altitude on a rocky coastline. The Taurus mountain
range, rising to 3086 meters above this coastline, wraps the city of
Antalya like a cradle. Land and sea everywhere meet the beaches
stretching for miles or the steep cliffs. The Taurus mountains against
the blue backdrop of the sky, the precipices and especially the caves
close to the sea add another dimension to the beauty of the
region. The views from the old yacht harbour of Antalya (known as
Antalya Yat Limani) are dramatic and exceptionally picturesque.
Antalya
is also a province covering 20,788 sqkm. It has a coastline
of 657 km. The provincial population was 1700 000 inhabitants by year
2000. The region had 4.17 % yearly population growth rate between years
1990-2000, which was more than the national rate of 1.83 %. The fast
rate of urbanization and increase of employments in tourism & other
service sectors have stimulated the demand on coastal regions. Antalya
City is a sub-regional centre controlling mainly commercial,
agricultural economic activities in its hinterland. Recent developments
in tourism sector, starting in the 1970s, have transformed the city
into an international resort centre.
Antalya
province attracts the 30% of foreign tourists visiting Turkey. history
of Antalya region goes back into antiquity, when it was a part of
Pamphilia region, neighbouring ancient Lycia, Pisidia & Cilicia. Besides
the archaeological sites, there are 3 National Parks and 3 Specially
Protected Areas within the province. The Environmental Plan (1995-2015
) aims to cope with the high developmental pressures during the
planning period in order to make Antalya an important centre of
international relations and decisions, to preserve the natural and
cultural heritage with the Mediterranean characteristics and to plan
with a greater sensitivity towards the rich biodiversity & existing
natural eco-systems & coastal zones.

Small
and large streams emerging from the west side of the Taurus water the
plains on their journey to the Mediterranean. This translucent running
water, cascading into the sea at points along the coast, is another
attractive sight.
The plant life of
Antalya is extremely varied. Every kind of tropical plant can be found
along the coast. Visitors to Antalya are struck by the size attained by
the different species of cactus. When you reach the foothills of the
Taurus, you will see they are covered in the typical Mediterranean
maquis, while the forests are full of thriving oaks and pine trees. The
coton and sesame plantations and citrus and banana groves of the plains
have a beauty of their own.
In Antalya
the four seasons only appear on the calendar, as there is no real
winter here, so much so that when in 1985 for the first time in 60
years snow fell, it was front page news. The summers are hot and
rainless while the other months are warm and often rainy, with a mean
annual temperature of 18.7 °C. On average there is no rain for 309.5
days a year. It is very rare for the temperature to drop below zero.
During the last 40 years the highest recorded temperature was 44.6 °C.
In Antalya the average humidty rate is 64%, whereas the seat
temperatures are 17.6 °C in January, 18.0 °C in April, 27.7 °C in
August and 24.5 °C in September. The Antalya region has been a
cause of attraction to different civilizations from the ancient
past. It has been famed as the “Heaven on earth” from as long
back as the 1st century BC. This naturally elegant place was only
bettered by consecutive arrivals of different races. The natural wealth
of Antalya was augmented by rich cultural and historical attributes. It
covered Pamphylia or “the land of all tribes”.
The
multifaceted history of Antalya begins with the advent of the Pergamum
King Attalus, who reached the place in search of an earthly paradise.
The Romans who lent their own touch to the city followed him. The
Byzantines, Seljuk Turks and Ottomans all flourished in this ancient
city and enriched it.
Belek Belek
is a busy resort town specifically developed for tourism, and since mid
80's, has grown to engulf the neighbouring village of
Kadriye. Boasting 300 days of sunshine and the warm, turquoise
waters of the Mediterranean, Belek has become a haven for those seeking
the luxury of five-star hotel complexes, as well as first-class golfing
facilities.
Many
Belek hotels have their own stretch of private beach and some
visitors never leave the comforts of their
beachfront hotels. Belek is close to a number of interesting
sites and there are several exciting activities on offer for those who
can bear to tear themselves away.
The ruins of the ancient
Roman town of Perge is an interesting excursion, as is the
well-preserved ancient amphitheatre at Aspendos, whose acoustics have
stood the test of time and that still plays host to the occasional
concert.
Jeep safaris into the mountains are another popular
outing, as are boat trips, watersports, and visits to nearby Manavgat
waterfalls and the thermal baths at Pamukkale. Scuba diving, white
water rafting, horse riding and more are also on offer.
The
town of Belek itself is well designed and has a small shopping
centre, some souvenir shops and some cafes. Kadriye has more to
offer in the way of street markets and nightlife, but day trips to
busier towns such as Alanya or Antalya are also available. Belek
is thus the perfect resort for those seeking the indulgence of lazing
on a sun lounger by the pool all day, with one's every need taken care
of. please also refer to Turkish Golf Regions
Side
Side
(pronounced see-deh), is a beautiful coastal resort on the
Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Side is approximately 15kms east
of Antalya city and is located on a small peninsula only 800m in
length. In
this pretty town, modern architecture, chic shops and late night bars
stand side by side with the ruins of an ancient city. Surrounded
by two stretches of golden beaches and sparkling waters of the
Mediterranean, gifted with endless archeological wonders – Side has
rightly developed as one of the most popular holiday resorts for
visitors from across the globe.
The best times of the year
to visit Side are in late April, May, early June and October, when you
can enjoy the charm of Side to the fullest. However, Side can be
extremely crowded at peak season and particularly over the week
ends.
Antalya airport is only 55km from Side.
With its history
dating back to the 6th century B.C., Side boasts of one of the earliest
settlements of Anatolian Turkey, also known as Asia Minor. Due to
its strategic location, Side served as an important harbor during the
Hittite period and became a significant commercial town. Side
acted as a commercial port connecting eastern and western Mediterranean
countries. Prior to that, the region served as a slave market,
which traded in African slaves and as a hideout for pirates owing to
its long sandy beaches, which acted as perfect hideouts for pirates and
slave traders. Later Side flourished as a legitimate commercial
center. The ancient Aspendos amphitheater, the temples of Gods
and Goddesses, the Roman baths and various archeological finds bear the
proof of Side’s might as a very important settlement and cultural
centre.
Main attractions Side offers for visitors are:
Aspendos Aspendos
theatre, built in 167 A.D. by architect Zeno, son of Theodorius, is one
of the largest amphitheatres in the world. It contains 40 rows of
marble banks built against a hilltop and used to accommodate 15,000
people in its heydays. This Hellenistic theatre was built during
the reign of Marcus Aurelius and was dedicated to the Gods. It
was built by two brothers, as a gift to the city, and till date it is
extremely well preserved and very much in use.
Aspendos also
has a 225m long historical bridge that was built by an Anatolian
emperor in the 13th century. This bridge has been recently
restored and houses souvenir shops. Apart from these, Aspendos is
endowed with the remnants of a Basilica, Agora and one of the largest
aqueducts (100 A.D.) in Anatolia.
Temples of Apollo and Athena Built
in the second half of the second century A.D., these identical looking
temples were dedicated to Athena (Side’s patron Goddess) and Apollo.
Manavgat This waterfall is a cozy stop, with restaurants and shops and attracts many tourists.

Beaches Apart
from the historical treasures, Side also boasts many of nature’s
bounties. Deep blue Mediterranean Sea, gust of fresh air and two
extraordinary beaches of golden colored sand on either side.
Some
other attractions include the Byzantine hospital (6th century B.C.),
Nymphaeum (fountain in the city wall), the Roman bath converted into
museum, etc.
Activities in Side
Parasailing
is on top of the agenda as far as water sports go in Side. For
those keen shoppers, Manavgat offers plenty to look at and bargain
with. Everything is up for a happy bargain in Side – from
candles, glass balls with snow and ice bears, penguins, Turkish coffee
making equipments or handicrafts like carpets, to jewellery and leather
goods.
Side also boasts a fantastic night life for party
goers. You can stay by the harbour or visit the most popular
hangout in the coast – Oxyd.

If
you want to get away from the hustle-bustle of the urban life, go for a
solitary night walk amidst the ruins or along the beaches. You will
treasure the experience. There are various restaurants in Side to
cater for various tastes. If you have a sweet tooth, come to Petek
(honeycomb) in Manavgat. This bakery has a sitting corner and they
serve different types of sweets, puddings and the real Turkish coffee.
For
a light snack, Pide is the best choice, which is a Turkish specialty of
fresh bread baked on a hot plate and it comes in varied flavors.
Seafood
delicacies or fresh fish are best served in Minos; the open-air
restaurant. For whole meals, you can visit the beach restaurant of
Hukukcular, which serve cheap food and beer. You can visit the Zumrut
restaurant, which serve complimentary fresh pita bread with garlic
butter and fresh fruits at the end.

This pretty (now rather developed we must add) town is well gifted
in terms of natural beauty and ruins etc. Old Roman ruins
and Byzantine churches surround the town centre of Alanya as well as
its many districts. Alanya's 14th century
castle stands tall and empowering over the hills of the town
and paves the way to exciting sea caves down
under. The well famous cave of Damlatas is a major tourist
attraction. These charming and healing caves boast thousands
of stalactites and stalagmites with a warm humid atmosphere
with healing attributes.
The famous Alanya fortress was
built in 1229. It includes the palace, churches, the
huge lantern, Seljuk baths and cisterns. The unmissable Red Tower
is the one of the most prominent symbols of Alanya. This 35
metres high octagonal prism was initially used to guard the
dock and has many historical remnants in it. The
colourful Alanya dockyard is also of historical significance.
The
old harbour of Alanya is a magical and lively place with yachts
and cafe / bars coming together to support the lively Alanya night
scene.
