A brief history of Antalya Information
A brief history of Antalya Summary
Sitting atop a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Antalya City stretches over what was once ancient Pamphylia and the seat of Lycia. The city was founded in 150 BC by Attalos II, the king of Pergamon, who named it Attalia and used the city to house his powerful fleet. When he died 17 years later the city was willed to the Roman republic, under which the city was further developed. When Christianity came to the Antalya region after the second century, St Paul and St Barnabas are said to have visited en route to spread the word of God in distant lands. Attalia became a base for the Christian Crusades against the Levant and Cypriot Muslims.
During Byzantine rule Antalya was a major city. But by 1118 it had lapsed into an isolated outpost against the Ottomans, and accessible only by sea. In 1119, with the help of John Axuch, John II reconnected the city of Antalya with the rest of the empire by ridding the land routes surrounding the city of the marauding Turks.
The Antalya region was conquered by the Seljuk Turks early in the 13th century, and Antalya City became the capital of a large Turkish province.
By the 20th century Antalya's population was growing quickly. In 1911 around 25,000 people likved in the city, including Jews and Christians who lived in separate quarters around the port. The city was called Adalia by that stage, and visitors came from far and wide to see the city wall.
Antalya was briefly occupied by the Italians during World War I until the Turkish Republic was founded in 1923.
