Mediterranean ski dream to come true in '08
Posted on 01-Jan-1970 01:00
The Mediterranean's longest cable car line of 4,350 meters, opened on Mount Tahtali in resort city of Antalya, will connect ski slopes with the sea by winter 2008. The cable car will enable visitors to enjoy swimming in the sea and skiing on the snow at the same time, and a bird's eye view of the Mediterranean
Skiing on fresh snow and swimming in the sea on the same day or even in the same hour might seem like another cool fantasy. The world-famous Doppelmayr/Garaventa-Group is about to make this dream come true in Antalya, a southern resort city of Turkey. The group opened the Mediterranean's longest cable-car line in Antalya, the high-speed tourism city of Turkey. Expected to be fully operational by winter 2008, those who choose Antalya for their holiday should prepare to enjoy sea and snow at the same time, plus a bird's-eye view of the Mediterranean
The 4,350-meter cable-car line with no station breaks joins the 2,365-meter peak of Mount Tahtali rising between the Kemer district of Antalya and the Tekirova resort with the Mediterranean. The 10-minute journey to the summit in 80-seat cabins is a breathtaking ride, say passengers. The Tahtali cable car, providing visitors with an opportunity to ski and swim on the same day, will be in use during eight months and will help people connect to other winter sports as well.
Ski track project
Following the giant 25 million euro cable car project, the Doppelmayer/Graventa will also launch the construction of a ski track in April 2008. The ski track in Tahtali will be completed in three stages and will have a total length of 12 km with each stage being four kilometers long. The cost is estimated to be between six and eight million euros. Once the ski facility starts functioning, vacationers staying at one of the hotels in Tekirova or Çamyuva down the mountain will have the chance to go skiing within half an hour of swimming. On Tahtali, with a white snow cap on its summit wearing until April, the earth and sky could almost be mistaken for each other this time of year. When you climb from the base station at 726 m to the top station at 2,365 m, your eyes encounter an amazing Mediterranean panorama with beautiful seashores under the clouds
1,000 visitors a day expected
The Tahtali cable car seems like a miraculous feat of engineering. Haydar Gümrükçü, a tourism dealer and the manager of the facility, said they expect about 1,000 visitors a day to the summit during the summer. The two cabins of 80 persons each work in opposite directions every half hour during the summer months, said Gümrükçü, adding that the roundtrips will be scheduled hourly during winter months.
Gümrükçü believes that the Tahtal? Cable Car is located in one of the world's most beautiful national parks and will contribute to the tourism income of both the region and the country. Gümrükçü said the facility is already attracting a great deal of attention since its opening will draw multitudes of visitors next summer. “I believe especially nature lovers will be addicted to the Tahtali Cable Car,” he said.
According to Gümrükçü, the facility will attract more attention after the construction of a chair lift and a ski track. Because the area is a national park, which is not open to hotels, visitors will stay in hotels down the mountain, he said.
To reach the Mount Tahtali summit in the newly opened cable car in these winter months, expect to pay YTL 40. Restaurants and other facilities serve day-trippers on the mountain. Gümrükçü said making good on this investment of more than 30 million euros will take a couple of years, considering the cable-car charges, etc. Considering the investment as a risk venture, he added, “Making a dream come true is an important thing to achieve.”
