Traditional Uzumlu Houses


Uzumlu is unspoilt and uncommercialised, and for those who want to escape the rat race and the pressures of modern living, here is a place to totally unwind, and yet, it is only 18km from Fethiye. In the village of Uzumlu there are restaurants, grocery shops, a post office, wine bar and a weekly market held on Fridays. As you walk around the village you will see the local ladies at their looms, weaving the “dastar – scarf”.

The village of Uzumlu is 500m above sea level in a fertile plain surrounded by an imposing mountain range. The beauty of the village has attracted a few foreigners, but Uzumlu remains a working village relying on agriculture and traditional crafts.

uzumlu_typical.jpgThe village's name translates as "with grapes" and vines producing a variety of grapes abound. Fields of cotton, sesame, aniseed, wheat, barley and summer vegetables surround the village while on the mountain slopes apples, pomegranates, almonds, pears and olives are grown. 


The heart of the village is a square bordered by home-produce shops, a post office, a mosque as well as the inevitable tea-house. Wandering around the small lanes that fan out from the square you can see women weaving cotton on traditional pedal looms in front of their houses. There are a few basic restaurants with an excellent modern wine bar offering local wines and good food. Closer to the villa there is a smart restaurant just a short stroll away and there are three other restaurants within ashort drive from the villa.


The Roman city of Cadianda is behind and above the village at 900m and is reached by a dirt  road a few minutes drive from the village; the village itself is under 2km from the villa.
