After spending $1.5 billion on its construction Telman Ismailov was not going to skimp on the opening of his new hotel in the Turkish resort of Antalya. Tom Jones was on hand to sing, along side Mariah Carney whilst Richard Gere, Sharon Stone and Paris Hilton turned up to add some Hollywood glamour to the event, thereby ensuring that The Mardan Palace will soon be as famous as the other five star destination resorts around the world that attract the movers and shakers of the celebrity jet set.
Drawing their inspiration from the Dolmabahce Palace on the banks of the Bosphorous in Instanbul, but with touches of other buildings in the city too, The Mardan Palace is without doubt the most opulent hotel in Turkey and its 560 rooms are superbly equipped and with the largest swimming pool in the country, complete with gondolas to ferry you around on it and the five enormous floor to ceiling aquariums, not to mention the artificial reef with baby sharks that you can swim with, the whole resort seems to be an exercise to test a journalists range of superlatives.
Dining has always been a high point of any visit to Turkey and The Mardan Palace doesn"t disappoint with ten restaurants including Japanese, Russian, French, Thai and traditional Turkish which should satisfy the most demanding gastronomes. The spa and health centre comes in at seven and a half thousand square meters - so plenty of space for everyone, and in addition there are tennis, volleyball and squash courts and even a bowling alley. In 2010 a Jack Nicklaus designed 18 hole golf course will be opened. All in all The Mardan Palace is quite a place, let"s hope that there are enough people who can afford the 360 Euro low season rate for a standard room - I have no doubt the two Royal Suites will be full, there are always people around who can afford 14,000 Euro a night!
