About Kas

If you did a Google image search on 'Kas, Antalya', you would find many beautiful pictures of the town, the Mediterranean and the surrounding area. This is one of the few places in the world (that I have been) where the reality is so much more wonderful than a picture can capture.  Kas is a calm and picturesque town nestling between the Mediterranean and the Taurus Mountains, whose steep slopes rising to 500 meters protect it from the northerly winter winds. This is the most southerly of Turkish resorts and it enjoys long hot summer days and mild winters.

kas-harbour.jpg

It is located in the region known as Lycia, the homeland of the once renowned people of the Lycian civilisation, who predated the Greeks and Romans. Kas was built on the site of the ancient Greek town of Antiphellos but remains of the earlier Lycian civilisation are to be seen all around.

kas_location.jpgThis is an area of wonderful scenery, fascinating history, abundant and varied wildlife and a gorgeous climate. The thriving town of about 8000 local inhabitants is large enough to be able to offer the visitor a copious range of tourist facilities but not so large as to lose its sense of intimacy and integrity.

The reputation of Kas has been such that in recent years many Turks have made it their choice of holiday destination. Now it is favoured by visitors from many nations who enjoy the fact that everything is here but on a human scale. It is just a little too distant from airports to attract the interest of package holiday companies!

Excellent restaurants and shops are to be found in the older part of the town - a hillside cluster of buildings with traditional Ottoman balconies and stone-paved streets. To the west of the town the ancient Greek amphitheatre is still used for concerts and other cultural events.

When the sun goes down, the town square adjacent to the harbour throngs with people relaxing and enjoying the many street cafes and bars or simply taking in the Jasmine scented evening air. The ancient rock tombs on the hillsides above Kas are lit up and the ambiance is fabulous. Many people who visit Kas (me and my family included) fall in love with the place and make it their home. It is difficult to explain, but there is a spirit to the place that is unique and deeply satisfying.

Until fairly recently when the coastal roads were built, access to the town was only possible by boat; today boating still plays a large role in the life of the town. The harbour offers mooring for a range of vessels including gulet cruise boats which can be chartered to tour the beautiful coastline and myriad of off shore islands. A new marina is being built which will offer mooring for a 470 yachts. The impact on property prices in the area will be significant. Completion of this project is expected to be October 2008.

Kas is renowned as the best centre in Turkey for scuba diving with its crystal clear waters and abundant variety of sea life. Other activities include paragliding, sea-kayaking, trekking, mountain biking, canyoning and jeep safaris.

For serious walking or for a gentle stroll there is the 509 kilometer Lycian way which passes by Kas and is considered by the Sunday Times to be one of the ten most beautiful walks in the world.
From a practical perspective, Kas has 3 supermarkets (you can buy frozen food,Cameron!) that offer pretty much everything you would expect. There is also a good variety of butchers, green grocers, fish mongers, wine merchants, spice shops, hardware shops, barbers, beauty parlours, boutiques, shoe shops etc. Friday is market day.. and there you will find local produce including all manner of vegetables, cheese and fruit - as well as clothes, shoes, fancy goods and hardware stalls.

Within striking distance there are many beaches and coves to explore. Patara has the longest beach in Europe - it stretches 18 kilometres of tree fringed white sand - it is forbidden to build there. The entire beach is a protected as a wild life conservation area as it is where the Caretta Caretta turtles lay their eggs. Patara is also famous as the birth place of St.Nicholas (Santa!).

There is loads more to tell, I could go on and on! hopefully the above has given you at least a taste of the place. Please let me know if you would like further information.  I look forward to showing off Kas to you when you come!
